The city of Phoenix Housing Department will accept online applications for the Section 8/Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8 through Friday, Aug. 12 at 5 p.m. Once the application period closes, 10,000 applicants will be randomly selected using a lottery system and will be placed on the wait list.
“We are thrilled that Phoenix can now offer this program electronically versus having residents stand in long lines and fill out applications by hand,” said Cindy Stotler, Housing Department Director. “Customer service comes first and in order to better serve our customers, the online application will be offered in English and Spanish, residents will have several days to apply, and everyone will have an equal opportunity to get on the wait list through a lottery selection process.”
Residents are required to complete their applications ONLINE ONLY at phoenix.gov/housing. Public facilities such as libraries and community centers will provide computer access at no cost.
The city’s HCV program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and is available for low-income individuals and families to provide safe and decent affordable housing. Program participants pay at least 30 percent of their adjusted gross monthly income toward their rent to a private landlord of their choice and the program pays the landlord the remaining balance of the rent. Families from the Section 8 wait list are selected in accordance with HUD requirements and local preferences.
