On the island of Kauai, Hawaii, an endangered Newell's shearwater seabird was found parentless and lost in the undergrowth. Scientists rescued the orphan and brought him to the care of wildlife rehabilitators. Nicknamed De Novo ("new beginning"), the baby bird was nurtured into a healthy fledgling that flew out to sea two months after his rescue.
The film was produced by American Bird Conservancy in partnership with Kauai Endangered Seabird Recovery Project, Save Our Shearwaters, Pacific Rim Conservation, the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources' Division of Forestry and Wildlife , and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative provided critical support for predator control in collaboration with Division of Forestry and Wildlife at montane nesting areas within the Hono O Na Pali Natural Area Reserve and the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) at Upper Limahuli Preserve. NTBG also supported vegetation restoration efforts at Nihoku. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation provided critical funding support.
