Doughnut explores the power of words, and the fact that how the world sees us is informed so much by what we say. It’s about how we can present two conflicting ‘truths’ to two sets of people, and both parties will buy our words wholesale. It also looks at the nature of forgiveness, and whether or not you can truly do your time for a past crime.
As with all our films, we want it to be entertaining on first watch, but with enough questions and layers that you want to discuss with fellow viewers afterwards what you would have done in the same situation, and watch it again.
Some kind words so far:
‘I genuinely thought this was terrific… it showed a real mastery of tone,’ – Jason Wood, Artistic Director, HOME, Manchester.
‘I thought this was great. Beginning reminded me of Inside No. 9’ – Ben Wheatley (Free Fire, High-Rise).
‘Very dark and very funny. The shock of [plot point spoiler] is so powerful and changes the dynamic so dramatically’ – Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones, The Crown).
‘It’s really good. Love the cinematography. The pace. The humour is fabulously subtle’ – Maxine Peake (Funny Cow, Fanny Lye Deliver’d)
‘Brilliant. I laughed my arse off all the way through that,’ – Barry Ward (Dating Amber, Jimmy’s Hall)
