Featuring… Cold Fusion – Although it had been conceived of earlier, it wasn’t until the standoff of the Cold War that cold fusion, ironically, started to be taken seriously. Touted as the holy grail of energy, the premise behind it is that of a nuclear fusion reaction of two hydrogen atoms taking place at room temperature, unlike the ‘hot’ nuclear fusion that occurs in our sun, or the nuclear fission that is caused by splitting atoms – this would redefine the way we think of cheap, affordable, and plentiful energy because it would allow us to harvest a much bigger output but with much fewer side effects. One of the biggest players in the US military-industrial complex, Lockheed Martin, issued a press release in October saying they were developing a smaller-scaled nuclear reactor that could be deployed on the back of a truck. Genetic Engineering – People squirm when they hear the word ‘genetic engineering’, and for good reason. Flashbacks of Jurassic Park notwithstanding, more often than not we simply can’t predict the consequences of fiddling around with genes. One recent area where this has become an issue has been in politics – back in 2012 Congress was actually looking at trying to engineer specific molds and fungi to wipe out the drug crops of other countries, in particular the poppy fields in Afghanistan and the coca fields in Peru where the plant is perverted from its traditional usages and turned into cocaine. Weather Control – This is one example of a “cultural universal”, meaning that it is something all human cultures worldwide have attempted. And while most people love lightning storms, recent studies have prompted more questions than answers. It wasn’t until the early 2000’s that scientists were able to conclusively prove that lightning in fact created very intense X-rays, the same sort of radiation that is used in hospitals and dentist offices. Artificial Intelligence – Admit it, you’ve probably worried about a proverbial robot take-over of humanity at some point in your life. With movies like AI and Terminator, there does seem to be an embedded paranoia about technology in our culture. Nuclear Mutants – The only thing more pervasive than our infatuation with the robot apocalypse is the mutant apocalypse. There must be something about Florida that invites disaster, because the Miami-based Turkey Point nuclear reactor is actually situated on over 20 thousand acres of a pristine marshland conservation area. Yes, you heard right.
